One Pound at a Time: How I Lost 40 lbs at 71

At 5’3”, 71 years old, and 40 pounds lighter—this journey has been nothing short of a miracle.

I started my journey in April of last year and consistently lost about a pound a week until December. Since then, I’ve moved into maintenance—occasionally still losing half a pound here and there—but I’m very happy with where I’m at, especially at 71 years old.
The truth is, at this stage of life, the skin doesn’t bounce back like it used to, so I really can’t afford to lose much more. I’ve gone from a size 14 to a size 6/4, and I feel better than I have in years.
I’m not what you’d call a “super responder,” but I am incredibly proud of my steady progress. This is the first time in my life that I’ve lost weight and haven’t struggled to maintain it.

I go to the gym two to three times a week, and I average around 1200 calories a day. Some days I eat more—up to 1700—and other days a little less, maybe around 600. But it averages out, and that flexibility lets me still enjoy social events and eat what I want in moderation.
I currently do seven units of medication every two weeks, and that seems to be holding me just fine. I also focus on staying hydrated with 64 oz of water daily and prioritizing protein with my meals.
